England.  Lincolns are persons from Lincoln, not necessarily of Lincoln.  The 1891 name distribution in fact showed the largest number of Lincolns to be in fact in Norfolk to the south of Lincolnshire followed by Yorkshire to the north, rather than in Lincolnshire.

A Thomas Lyncolne was recorded as farming in the Norfolk village of Tasburgh in 1413 and these Lincolns stayed in the village for the next four hundred years.  Hingham in Norfolk had a number of Lincolns, including Thomas the cooper and Samuel the weaver who emigrated to America in the 1630's and had famous descendants.

America.  Abraham Lincoln's ancestor in America was Samuel Lincoln who left his native Norfolk and came to Hingham, Massachusetts in 1637, following his brother Thomas who had arrived there two years earlier.  He and his wife Martha had eight children who survived, three of whom lived onto their eighties.  The line from Samuel Lincoln also led to:
  • Levi Lincoln and his son Levi, both Massachusetts Governors
  • Enoch Lincoln, brother of the younger Levi and Governor of Maine in 1827
while Benjamin Lincoln, a general during the Revolutionary War, was a descendant of Thomas Lincoln of Hingham (Lincolns in the South have tended to be named after General Benjamin Lincoln rather than after President Abraham Lincoln).

Abraham Lincoln's line went from Massachusetts to New Jersey and then to Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana and in Illinois and the farm there where Abraham grew up.  Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln had four children, but only their eldest, Robert, would survive to adulthood.
